Got Mercury Amalgams? Iodine May Be Beneficial

Did you know that most people with mercury amalgams, the most common form of dental filling, regularly have high levels of heavy metals in their body and suffer from heavy metal toxicity?

Mercury is a highly toxic substance that should be avoided at all costs. The US Environmental Protection Agency classifies mercury filling material, once removed from the mouth, as so toxic that it must be handled in special containers and buried in toxic waste sites. Proper toxic waste sites do not include your teeth, the WHO has suggested that mercury in fillings leaks into the patients system at a rate of 3-17ug/day just from chewing. This does not include gas fumes from heated liquids.

Symptoms of Heavy Metal Toxicity

The main signs of mercury toxicity, in addition to lots of silver in the mouth, typically include:

  • irritability and fits of anger or even violence;
  • depression and brain fog;
  • fatigue, lethargy, chronic fatigue syndrome;
  • muscle / joint aches / tenderness and fibromyalgia;
  • weight gain and an inability to lose weight;
  • kidney malfunction;
  • colds, flues and weakened immune system;

What Are The Options?

While the long term solution for mercury amalgams is removal and replacement with inert, biological compatible substances, proper detoxification with a specific heavy metal detoxification protocol prepared by our Nutritionist may assist in the short term management and alleviation of symptoms.

One important component of mercury detoxification is supplementation with sufficient levels of iodine. Iodine, at the right quantity, is a powerful heavy metal chelator, meaning that it binds to heavy metals, helping to remove them from the body through the urine. The problem is, that most of us are not obtaining enough iodine to meet daily recommended requirements even though these requirements are ridiculously low. The RDA for iodine is 150mcg, this is the amount of iodine necessary to prevent occurrence of goiter but far too little to unlock the detoxification benefits of iodine.

Clinical experience by Dr. David Brownstein, one of the leading advocates for the role of iodine supplementation in health and author of the book “Iodine, Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It”, has shown just how effective iodine supplementation can be.

In a case study Dr. Brownstein discusses, baseline urine testing for the presence of mercury revealed little or no mercury release. This meant that mercury was being stored by the body in tissues and organs, in turn leading to the symptoms described above. After supplementation with 50mg of iodine for one day, urine testing revealed the presence of over 20ug of mercury in the urine. This is the same urine that was previously stored binding with the iodine and in turn being excreted. Testing after 30 days of supplementation showed that this had dropped to 10ug as the body successfully worked through the stored mercury in the body.

Where to Obtain Iodine?

Iodine is naturally occurring in fish and sea vegetables such as dulse. With mercury contamination of our oceans and waterways these sources of iodine contain their own share of risks and for those seeking to detoxify heavy metals are best avoided.

To obtain therapeutic doses of iodine generally requires supplementation, while some multi-mineral products contain iodine, the easiest method is through the use of a liquid form of iodine, using iodine drops.
